With Deportivo Alavés back up and running and a young and ambitious team on the pitch, it is inevitable to look back to remember the last great Alavés that left its mark on the club's history. After more than a decade out of the First Division , the Babazorro team returned with enthusiasm and with a generation of players who had a memorable season.
In goal, the goalkeeper was Fernando Pacheco , who stood out as one of the best goalkeepers in Spain at the time. Although his performance has not been the same outside the Vitorian team, his time at Alavés consolidated him as a key piece of the club's success.
In the defensive line, names like Laguardia , Feddal , and Alexis offered security, but there was one player who stood out above the rest: the young Theo Hernández . Coming from the youth ranks of Atlético de Madrid , Theo burst into professional football with incredible force, quickly becoming one of the best full-backs in the country. His excellent season at Deportivo Alavés earned him a move to Real Madrid , marking an important leap in his career.
In the centre of the field, the historic captain Manu García led the midfield, accompanied by Víctor Camarasa and another youngster with great potential: Marcos Llorente , on loan from Real Madrid. This midfielder, who was already attracting attention in the elite, found his opportunity to establish himself as a world-class player at Alavés.
Alavés' attack was not far behind in terms of talent and charisma. The controversial Deyverson was the team's top scorer, with 7 goals. Alongside him, Ibai Gómez had one of his best seasons on an individual level, while other players such as Gaizka Toquero and Edgar Méndez complemented the team's attack with their effort and quality.
The 2016-2017 season was not only marked by an outstanding ninth place in La Liga , with 55 points, just outside the European spots, but also by the impressive run in the Copa del Rey . The team led by Mauricio Pellegrino reached the final of the tournament, where they faced FC Barcelona in an epic battle. Although Alavés fell with honour by 3-1, they managed to momentarily equalise with Leo Messi 's opening goal, leaving a memorable image for the club's history.
Now that Deportivo Alavés is finding its way again, it is impossible not to look back and remember this team that, with its fighting spirit and talent, earned a place in the hearts of fans and in the history of the club.
